My Civic Engagement Experience
After completing this unit, I feel more civically engaged. Truthfully, prior to this unit, I did not know that voting on propositions was a thing. However, after being informed of these propositions, I realized how important it is for us to voice our opinions on these issues. As this unit required me to do some research, I learned how time consuming research can be especially when you have to make sure you are pulling information from credible sources. Being that this unit was also group preformed, there were definitely some challenges mainly with communication. It was difficult to get ahold of some of group members to make sure they were doing their part. As team leader, I messaged them on Canvas, but when I realized that only two of my group members getting back to me, I tried to ask if there were other ways I could effectively communicate with them, but only one of my group members got back to me on that issue. Soon it came the day to turn in the assignment and there were still two members that had not done their part, so I took matters into my hands to pull their weight because I did not want to turn in an incomplete assignment. Looking back at my performance as a group member, I believe that I did a great job. I contributed a lot of time doing research for my part along with the research for some of my other group members. One thing I would have done differently is try to get ahold of my group earlier in the week; I think that would have made a difference in making sure they did their part than me feeling like I had to pull their weight. Moving forward, I will continue to stay civically engaged and encourage other young adults the importance of being civically engaged. Going through some of these propositions, I realized how important it is to do our own research on these issues especially when you are on the fence about some of them.
Great work, Polly. I will be changing some aspects of group work to make leadership roles more fair.
