Dear Future INDIS 313 Student

Dear Future INDIS 313 Student,         I can speak for my fellow classmates when I say that we did not expect our first semester of college to pan out this way, and I am sure we all have had an experience of our own as we went through the motions. Many students may say that this first semester of distance learning was miserable, but my experience was quite the opposite. At first, I was very doubtful about my abilities to succeed, but once I got into the swing of things I began learning quite a few things about myself as a learner.       In this semester I took 5 classes worth a total of 16 units, and besides INDIS, none of my classes were synchronous, so I had quite the workload. One piece of advice I have to give is to always keep a planner and color-code your classes. Without a planner, I would not have been able to manage my workload. With a color-coded planner, you can write assignments and tests on the days they are due according t...

My schedule for next semester

Image
This semester has been a surprisingly well experience for me. I will say that mid semester, my motivation went downhill for a bit because taking 16 units can be mentally draining, but I was able to pick up the slack and get to work again. I'm hoping to be able to keep up this work ethic this next semester since I'm taking chem.  I haven't talked to my counselor since registering for fall semester classes, but during that first appointment with her we were able to plan for my spring schedule as well. This was helpful when I had my second contact meeting with my EOPS counselor because she was able to confirm that my spring schedule looked great and helped me create a Student Ed Plan. In talking to two of my counselors, this was the schedule we were able to produce for the spring semester:  One thing I didn't go over with my counselors was a backup plan, but I plan on registering for classes on the priority date I was given, so I'm hoping all things go accordingly and ...

Career Exploration

There were many new insights I learned about myself during this process. One thing I know for sure though is that this process secured my decision to go into any career that allows me to be of service to others whether it be in the medical field or not. In the career interest profile survey, I learned that my strongest profiles were social and enterprising. Enterprising came as a surprise to me because I have never seen myself as a leader or risk taker, but seeing that social was also high instilled in me the confidence that I am meant to help and guide others. I knew that the social aspect is part of my character and who I am but I was still confused about the enterprising aspect of my profile until I explored the jobs that matched me in medium, high, and extensive job preparations. There was one job I saw repeated in the high and extensive level of job preparations and it had to do with working in the faith ministry. For example, in the high job preparation I got directors, religious...

New Academic Skills I'm Learning

In this unit one skill I have reincorporated into my life is taking notes in Cornell notes style (Chapter 29: Taking Notes in Class). Taking Cornell notes was a skill I learned in middle school and which I continued to use throughout high school, but I did not use it efficiently. What I mean by this is that when I would take Cornell notes it was just that; I barely never interacted with it afterwards such as highlighting and starring important ideas and questions I think would be on the test. It was also rare that I would use the system as a study tool such as folding it looking at just the questions to help with retention. Since starting college I tried taking a different route to taking notes, but I found it difficult to study them. Since revisiting different note taking styles I have began taking a lot of my notes using the Cornell notes method. This past week I applied it to my Nutrition notes and noticed how much more efficient and concise my notes have been. I've also began i...

My Civic Engagement Experience

After completing this unit, I feel more civically engaged. Truthfully, prior to this unit, I did not know that voting on propositions was a thing. However, after being informed of these propositions, I realized how important it is for us to voice our opinions on these issues.  As this unit required me to do some research, I learned how time consuming research can be especially when you have to make sure you are pulling information from credible sources.   Being that this unit was also group preformed, there were definitely some challenges mainly with communication. It was difficult to get ahold of some of group members to make sure they were doing their part. As team leader, I messaged them on Canvas, but when I realized that only two of my group members getting back to me, I tried to ask if there were other ways I could effectively communicate with them, but only one of my group members got back to me on that issue. Soon it came the day to turn in the...

Time Management

For clarification, I didn't look at this assignment early enough to make a schedule off predictions of how much time I spend on each thing, but for my Stats class I have to keep track of my everyday schedule so the information in calendar is the reality of my everyday schedule. My schedule looks hectic, but I'm still able to get all my assignments done in a timely manner and not stress about cutting too close to deadlines. Looking at my schedule, it may seem like I procrastinate a lot because I have a lot of "time wasters" but I see them as mental breaks. As someone who is taking over 12 units this semester with classes that does everything asynchronously, I know how important it is to not procrastinate so majority of my days are filled with hours of studying and doing homework. Every once in a while I'll take social media and Netflix breaks to take my mind off of school for about 10 to 30 minutes. I've found these breaks crucial because, doing school work for...
